The “Do Not Call” list May Be Irrelevant
You might call this the Duck’s tip of the week (more like year). I just stumbled across something that most people might have already figured out…or maybe not. This morning, I got a call on my landline from a company referring to itself on my caller ID as “Hellcom.” How nice. Would I want to do business with a company with a name like that? I thought that was the pseudonym for Verizon. I had to check it out. It seems 800notes.com has some info from previous posters on this number. Someone mentioned on one of the posts that they had a Panasonic phone that blocked out any unwanted numbers. I went online to my phone company and the service is available at the carrier level. Yes as easy as *64 then pound and then the number and pound again or just #01# for the latest number. The next time they call they get an automatic hang up. Sure beats remembering to add your number to the “do not call” list every year or two (or whatever the term is). Plus, you can block out the ex-girlfriends number, and other calls (political) not necessarily covered by the government’s list.
I expect that all mobile phones have the same or similar feature. I rarely get any junk calls on that number because I don’t just give it out to just anyone. The main reason I keep a landline is that I give that number to companies I do business with and or other entities that may have the urge to call and try to upsell me. My landline is basically the gatekeeper for mostly unwanted calls and now I should be getting less of those. I went through my entire caller ID and quickly cross checked it against 800 notes (took about 10 minuted) and blocked all those junk numbers out with the flick of my wrist. Ain’t technology great? – D.A.
Jazz Legend John Levy
John Levy was a bassist and should be noted as the first major black personal manager in the the music business covering Pop and Jazz. He performed with such notable artist as Billy Holiday, Billy Taylor and others. Some of his clients included Nancy Wilson, Cannonball Adderly, and Ramsey Lewis. He passed away this past Friday, January 20th in his sleep at age 99 (the best way to go) in Altadena, California. More from the Grio.
You May Not Think You Knew Him But You Did – Discovered Etta James
Along with Etta James passing, we also lost Johnny Otis on January 17th, who is credited with discovering Etta James. He wrote, “Willie and The Hand Jive,” and “Every Beat of my Heart” for Gladys Knight. He was often referred to the “godfather of Rhythm and Blues.” He was 90.
“I’m Your Puppet” Robert Dickey Passes
Robert Dickey was a guitarist and singer best known for the James and Bobby Purify hit in 1966, “I’m Your Puppet.” Another big hit was “Shake Your Tail Feather.” I happen to personally like “Let Love Come Between Us” which did not get wild acclaim but can be heard on SoulClassics247.com just the same.
For the record, Dickey says he hated the song “I’m Your Puppet.” He died Dec 29, 2011 in his hometown of Tallahassee, Fl. He was 72.
